Hiking to Supai

Storyline

Course | Captioned screen recording of the course | Design document | Storyboard

This 15-minute course is based on my own Supai hiking adventure in 2019. Most of the photographs are my own (the others are from Pexels) and all the information is taken from the Official Havasupai Tribe Website.

Problem: This is a strenuous, lengthy hike in a location in Arizona that is susceptible to occasional flash floods and extreme heat, so this is not for a new hiker or someone who needs to be near a hospital for any reason. However, many hikers are unaware of the risks and rules.

Solution: Using the information page of the Official Havasupai Tribe Website, I created this course to engage hikers yet educate them on the rules and risks of hiking to and from Supai and respecting the reservation to bring down the number of complaints from locals and other hikers, injuries, and violations. There are three knowledge checks and a final five-question quiz.

Reflection: For accessibility purposes, I included a screen recording with captions of the Storyline course above. As I continue my journey of becoming a more inclusive instructional designer, I realize that each project should be designed with accessibility in mind from the inception of the project, not as an afterthought. If I were to recreate this course again, I would:

The transcript is in the description section of the video. Captions have been edited and enabled using YouTube Studio.

Hand Hygiene: Hand Washing

Storyline

Course

This 5-7 minute eLearning sample was created and provided as an interview request with this document provided (it is also available online, found via a Google search). I selected the section on hand washing hygiene, geared toward food handlers, and created a short course with a T/F variable, a scrolling panel, interactive videos and other elements using Storyline. All of the pictures and the first two videos were taken from Pexels or Freepik, the video demonstrating the proper handwashing technique with the popups is my own video, created after I couldn't find any handwashing videos with all of the steps included. Transcripts are included in the Notes section of the course.

How to Use Macros in Word

Storyline

Lesson

This is a 2-minute software simulation of how to use a button macro to automate tasks in Microsoft Work. This lesson could be part of a bigger course on macros in Word or features in Word.

Problem: Time adds up when Word users go through the same steps multiple times for certain tasks that is done repeatedly in Word.

Solution: I created a short software simulation walking users through creating a button macro to delete paragraph breaks as an example. Camtasia was used for the video where the macro was being recorded. Going through that example, users could now create and record their own button macro.

Three Handy Time Management Techniques

Rise

Course | Design document

This scenario-based course addresses a common concern that remote workers have about managing their time.

Problem: Working from home, remote employees struggle with tasks, breaks, and finishing on time because of a lack of time management plus potential at-home distractions.

Solution: I chose three manageable, specific techniques that those employees can use, with detailed steps, and consolidated the techniques into a ten-minute course. There is a knowledge check for each technique and a final three-question quiz.
