Microlearning
Short yet engaging and informative videos, presentations, or job aids.
Tools: Vyond, Camtasia, Snagit, WellSaid Labs, and PowerPoint
Otter Transcription Mobile App
Camtasia, WellSaid Labs, and Screen Recorder on Android
This three-minute video encourages learners to save time and use transcriptions instead of taking down tedious notes to reorganize later. The intro is a stock video combined with background music from bensound.com, plus a gif I created combined with a Camtasia stock intro. I demonstrated how Otter is used with a screen recording app, then imported it into Camtasia and used WellSaid Labs for text-to-speech.
Problem: Some videos do not have captions or a transcript. In addition, learners may want another notetaking solution and use their phones instead of a pen and paper.
Solution: An explainer video on how to use Otter, a transcription app.
The transcript is in the description section of the video. Captions have been edited and enabled using YouTube Studio.
Addressing Concerns about Solo Travel
Vyond and WellSaid Labs
This is an entertaining yet informative three-and-a-half-minute Vyond video about solo travel, based on real conversations that I've had. WellSaid Labs was used for text-to-speech.
Problem: Whether some people travel solo for business trips or for vacation, they are apprehensive about solo travel because they must depend on themselves to stay safe, navigate airports, and avoid boredom.
Solution: An seasoned solo traveler, Angie, and her friend, Leslie, discuss those valid concerns. Learners would identify with Leslie and the questions she raises.

D2L Brightspace: Making a module available only when 80% or higher is achieved on a test
Snagit
This is a two-minute video created in Snagit that shows how to make a module available only when a certain score or higher on a test has been achieved.
Problem: Some learners may already know introductory concepts in one of the first few modules in a D2L Brightspace course and would prefer to skip it. The facilitator may wonder how to test their knowledge before allowing them to proceed to other modules.
Solution: Using release conditions in the creation of a Brightspace course allows learners to "test out" of a module that has information they already know and move on to more difficult material instead of compelling them to go through that simpler module.

Image Accessibility in D2L Brightspace: mini-presentation
PowerPoint, Snagit, Camtasia
Slide deck | Demo video in slide deck (no audio) | Slide deck with script
Problem: Some subject matter experts and instructors are unaware of how to make an image accessible to learners who need screen readers to navigate through D2L Brightspace courses.
Solution: As part of a longer presentation on accessibility with four other instructional designers, I created a five-minute PowerPoint presentation with a demo video on the basics of alt text and image descriptions and how to add them on Brightspace. Examples were provided.
